Experience Mountain Soul At Sassafras Ridge Mountain Retreat,
Nestled In The Blue Ridge Mountains Between Two National Forests...
The Cherokee In Tennessee
And The Nantahala In
North Carolina!
Welcome To Mountain Soul ...the warm energy of mother nature and the universe from a unique cultural perspective. You are invited to bring your family and friends to share, join, release, relax and escape to a very special place in the forests called Sassafras Ridge Mountain Retreat.
Marcus Garvey Drive is the main road at Sassafras Ridge, a unique community nestled between two National Forests and situated atop the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains of Southeastern Tennessee. Watching silver-pink sunrises and mauve-purple sunsets are the favorite pastimes of the day. Sassafras Ridge provides an escape to an area of natural beauty and solitude. It is the place to go to experience the outdoors whether youre interested in hiking, nature walks, horseback riding, picnicking, fishing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, birdwatching, or photography. It is the place to go if you want to take time to smell the roses, or discover the rhododendron and delicate wildflowers.
Located in Turtletown, Tennessee, Sassafras Ridge Mountain Retreat consists of over 585 acres of pristine forests and wilderness, fanning across mountain peaks and ridges, and including a natural oasis known as the Harriet Tubman Nature Reserve. Bordering North Carolina at the state line, Sassafras Ridge has over forty springs, numerous roaring streams, miles of trails and two spring-fed lakes- Lake Nia and Lake Imani- stocked with trout and bream!
Sassafras was established by Shaka Kusaidi and Arike Logan, MD in 1989 as a beautiful, natural sanctuary for positive and progressive families and organizations. For ten years through 1999, they developed and built Sassafras Ridge into a community of over 485 acres and eighty landowner families. Since 2000, Kusaidi has expanded Sassafras by 100 acres... Sassafras 2000 and the Ridgetops ... and Dr. Logan has crossed over the state line with the Carolina Vistas at Sassafras Ridge.
"We give thanks to GOD for this rich and beautiful land, this experience, this community and this opportunity. Our collective potential is enormous," says Kusaidi, "Our landowners and community members are leaders in health, education, the arts, law, religion, business, construction, science, and communications. And we are diverse ... from the Caribbean, Canada, Latin America and Georgia ... to up North, New Orleans, the West coast and Asia. We all bring different experiences, but share a common love of nature, life and our unique community."
Hundreds of youth, families and organizations have visited Sassafras to participate in wilderness retreats since 1993 ... and over one ninety families have now joined by becoming landowners. Organizations and churches have included the 100 Black Women of Atlanta/Teens on The Move, Americorp, Third World Coalition of the American Friends Service Committee, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Impact Church, Kipp South Fulton Academy, Detroit Youth In Action, Southern Snow Seekers, and Camp Village.
Plan a trip soon for your organization or family!!!

THE MOUNTAIN SOUL NETWORK
The Mountain Soul Network is a development, marketing and programming team coordinated by Shaka Kusaidi. In addition to building communities, Sassafras land sales and construction consulting, they also produce and support cultural, health, spiritual, youth and business networking retreats and programs.
Kusaidi, a human rights activist, community organizer, graphic designer and publisher, has also established and worked with many institutions, organizations, urban ministry programs, and local/national campaigns. He has travelled extensively around the world, including the Caribbean and many African countries, and received numerous awards and citations.
In Philadelphia, he was the Director of the African Community Learning Center (AFCOM) for twelve years in the 1970's and 1980's, an educational/cultural institution with a strong community action component and located in a 100 year old, former Episcopalian church. He also served for five years as the Director of the Committee on Racial Concerns and Social Justice for the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
After relocating to Atlanta in 1988, he published the highly aclaimed magazine, Fast Forward...For Atlantans On The Move, and coordinated communications for the International Coalition of Women Physicians. Other organizations Shaka has worked with over the years include the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, Partners In Ecumenism, and the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund.
Kusaidi's latest initiative is a collaborative effort to build solar farms at Sassafras Ridge and throughout the South through Universal SolarWind.
Thousands of wild herbs and flowers bloom on Sassafras Ridge, starting in early spring and continuing until late into the fall. There are about thirty species of deciduous trees, making fall spectacularly beautiful with shades of peach, orange, gold, crimson, and green, painting the hillsides and valleys. Ginseng, yellow root, ginkgo, golden seal and hundreds of other helpful, healing herbs grow everywhere.
Harriet Tubman Nature Reserve, an area of Sassafras Ridge containing hundreds of flowers, plants, wild herbs and roaring streams, was set aside by the developers for all to experience and enjoy. A stroll down Harriet Tubman Trail, named in honor of our great freedom fighter and leader of the Underground Railroad, is a must for all visitors to Sassafras Ridge.
In the 1800s, Africans escaped from slavery in Georgia and Alabama and lived in the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. Many continued on the Underground Railroad to freedom in the North, some stayed and lived in the mountains with the Cherokee Indians, and some were forced to walk to Oklahoma with the Cherokee during the infamous Trail of Tears.
The African presence in that region is well documented, including Negro Creek and the old Negro Cemetery identified on the old U.S. Forest Service maps. We honor and respect those anscestors and the indigenous people of the region, the Cherokee Nation.
Pick some golden seal, ginseng or orange wild azaleas.
Play, pray or meditate by the roaring streams.

Feel the energy of the forests!

Nestled Between
Two National Forests ... Tennessee's Cherokee And North Carolina's Nantahala!
Many visitors and landowners see Sassafras Ridge as a get-a-way for weekends and vacations, while some families plan to eventually relocate or retire and live in the mountains full time. Beautiful homes are being built by landowners on spectacular, wooded lots, some which look out over 50-mile views of distant blue ridges in three states! As if this abundance is not enough, Sassafras, located in the Tri-state corner of Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina, is surrounded by two national forests.
The Cherokee National Forest, twenty minutes to the west, consists of 633,000 acres and includes the famous Ocoee River, the 1996 Olympic venue for kayaking and whitewater rafting events, a World Cup site for kayak racing, and the most popular whitewater rafting river on the East coast. The river empties into the Ocoee Lake which, on a spring or summer day, is dotted with jet skis, glass bottom boats and speed boats. The Cherokee also has miles of hiking trails and two sandy beaches. There is also the Hiawasse River, noted for its large trout and bass fishing, and the sport of tubing over its ice cold rapids.
To the east of Sassafras Ridge is the 92,000 acre Nantahala National Forest in Cherokee County, North Carolina. The Nantahala is loaded with wildlife, beautiful flora, magnificent natural waterways and almost every conceivable outdoor activity, including horseback riding, mountain climbing and hang gliding. And if you want to take your chances, Harrahs Cherokee Casino on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in the Nantahala, is only forty minutes away.
Near Sassafras Ridge, there's also horseback riding and antique shopping in town... and unique art galleries in Blue Ridge, GA only twenty minutes away. A golf course and even an airport for private airplanes is about ten minutes from Sassafras Ridge.
